We design studies that build understanding of users and business problems

The goal of the learn phase is to identify future opportunities by first fully understanding the problem space.

In practice, this means learning everything there is to know about the subject, especially about users, alongside the current internal situation, industry, market, and the wider socio-cultural context. We design bespoke research plans to scope problems, challenge assumptions, and create project briefs. The initial treatment is tailored according to maturity of project and product (below).

Scoping business issues
Research help us to make smart observations about what’s going on today to help us design for tomorrow. We start with a pre-flight phase to scope out problem spaces fully. Questioning all assumptions often reveals hidden opportunities, and early reframing and reshaping of projects. This applies across discontinuous technological innovation, as well as more continuous, incremental types of products.
Understanding users
Our approach is discovery-driven. Identifying the audience and getting to know them is invariably an unpredictable journey. We devise bespoke, rigorous approaches, and craft methods to fit the project, problem and situation. Our toolkit of generative techniques can help to uncover future opportunities.

Actionable insights
We extract meaningful and valuable insights based on data that can be actioned. We develop frameworks to help teams visualise and understand users. These artefacts set up and frame the following phases of development.
