Partnerships include

Notice what your competitors miss

Most businesses are now well-designed and marketed. AI and agents help them create professional, but soulless, brand worlds.

But many struggle to grow because they lack the distinctiveness that builds loyalty, cultural relevance, and keeps customers coming back.

The businesses that stand out do something special.

They create meaningful brand worlds that customers notice, feel and remember. And they want to return to, time and again.

It takes two qualities:

Confident creative judgement, and

An informed, unique point of view

They’re the gunpowder and spark for a special kind of brand experience.

It takes unorthodox thinking.

ABOUT

Dr Fiona Maciver

Unorthodoxy is in my DNA. I was born in the hospital where George Orwell wrote 1984. I’ve criss-crossed careers in academia, tech and consulting. And I’ve developed acumen from design to marketing, research to innovation.

Now independent, my advisory borrows the best of those experiences. I love getting to know the personalities making up a business. When your team talks to customers, human-to-human, that’s what creates a lasting commercial edge.

I’ve worked at the leading edge at Apple, Facebook, Accenture and the European Commission, and been trusted by brands including Meta, Ford and E.ON. I hold a PhD in Design Strategy and teach Creative Direction at Central Saint Martins in London.

SELECTED WORK

Unorthodox thinking in practice

  • Creative Leadership Training

Since 2023, I’ve worked with Central Saint Martins, London, to train more than 180 emerging creative professionals in Creative Direction. Through a five-day intensive, I help students move from instinct to strategy: Sharpening their creative judgement, understanding audiences more deeply, and turning original ideas into commercially impactful work. The result is more confident, more connected and more strategically aware creative leadership.

  • Growing a creative ecosystem for emerging technology

I advised Meta on the growth of a creative ecosystem around Spark AR, its augmented reality creation platform. Through research with early adopters and emerging creative businesses, I uncovered the behaviours shaping adoption of industry standard tools. The work informed strategic direction for creator engagement and long-term platform growth.

  • Reimagining the Ford Transit for an electric future

I worked with Ford on the development of its first all-electric Transit van, bringing a human-centred lens to one of the world’s most recognisable commercial vehicles. Taking a human-centred approach, I helped identify how businesses would need to adopt, use and trust an electric van in everyday working life, shaping product strategy around real customer needs, new revenue opportunities and the future of sustainable mobility.

  • Designing a learning ecosystem for developers

I advised Meta on a learning curriculum for Spark AR, its augmented reality creation platform. The programme helped developers build the skills, confidence and assessment readiness needed to progress towards official partner status. Drawing on insight from learning experts, early users and emerging creator segments, I helped shape the curriculum, content approach, recognition tiers, and assessment methods for a fast-evolving creative technology ecosystem.

  • Exploring the future of connected fitness

I contributed strategic input to early proposition thinking around Lululemon’s connected fitness ambitions, including the Mirror home workout platform. The work explored how a global wellness and sportswear brand could extend beyond product into digital services, subscription models and new customer experiences, assessing where emerging fitness technology can create value for users and the business.
